The Secret to Trust
Ever wrestled with trusting God? I’ll be honest, I have! So I asked God, “What is Trust? How can I trust?”
My first stop was the 1828 Dictionary to understand better the definition of the word “Trust” (The 1828 dictionary doesn’t just give the definitions but also Bible verses.)
Here’s what I found. TRUST is confidence; a reliance or resting of the mind on the integrity, veracity, justice, friendship or other sound principle of another person. Trust is something committed to a person’s care for use or management, and for which an account must be rendered. Confidence; special reliance on supposed honesty.
As I pondered these truths, this verse came to mind, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB) (underline mine).
Using blueletterbible.org, I checked the original Hebrew for the underlined words listed in the verse above. These words stood out from the definitions I found — reliance or resting of the mind, bold, courageous in every part of the journey.
Father I want to trust You (be reliant on You with the resting of my mind, bold and courageous) with all my heart. How can I do this, Father? Lord, I believe, help my unbelief. Lord, I trust, help my untrust.
Again the verse came, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6
This time acknowledge Him stood out. which means to know, learn to know. Therefore, bold, courageous, resting in God trust, comes from knowing Him and acknowledging Him in all things.
Trust comes from shining the light on any unrest with the knowledge of who God is, with the knowledge and revelation of our great God.
The God who created the universe, who can do all things. The God of everything and everyone, not bound by space or time. The God who loves with an unfailing love. The God who will direct my path, no matter where the journey, direction, or road leads.
Trust comes from remembering God, remembering His promises, remembering His provision, remembering (causing to know!) God! To know God is to trust Him! To Trust Him is to know Him!
When we trust God, we remain in the state of confident trust because we know Who is our Trust.
The more we dig into the Bible and find the deeper meanings, the more we can apply God’s truth to our lives. What words and verses help you trust in our amazing trustworthy God?
