The frog gift
With a heavy heart, I sat down in the grass and pulled weeds. Our sweet little dog who had blessed our family for fifteen years had passed away, and I missed Chipper’s furry little sweetness. In the past, whenever I worked in the yard, he would keep me company. Now, I sat alone and lonely.
I reached for a weed, and a startled frog hopped away. He then turned to look, stopped, and sat down watching me. I wondered if he was the frog several months ago I had rescued from the washer. Our dirty yard shoes had been stored on the patio, and I had thrown them in the washer without checking to see if anything was inside. Fortunately, before the cycle began, the Lord prompted me to check in the machine. The frog had popped out of the soapy water, and I had rescued him and taken him back to the yard. He now sat near me just watching. A few minutes later, content I was safe, he closed his eyes and napped.
The frog was a gift. The sweetness of his trust brought me to tears, and the sweetness of God to bring a friend while I worked made the the gesture even more precious. God knew I was missing Chipper, and God knew I needed a reminder to trust Him. God is kind and compassionate. He knows when we are hurting and need a reminder of His love.
James tells us every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above coming down from the Father of lights. God lights the dark places in our souls, the places sad and weary. The places lonely are lit with the reminders we are never forsaken and always loved.
When your days are dark, watch for God’s light shining in sweet ways. You are always loved and His light will always shine.
“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” ~ James 1:17 (NASB)
